Abstract

A brief description of the Endler's livebearer.

The Endler's livebearer (Poecilia wingei) is a small live bearing fish that naturally occurs in fresh waters in the Campoma and Buena Vista lagoons unto Carupano, in northeastern Venezuela.  This fish grows to an adult size of up to 1.8 inches long.  Mature males are noticeably smaller and more colorful than females.

The Endler's livebearer should be maintained in an aquarium of 10 gallons or larger.  Smooth rocks, driftwood (ZM2000) and live or artificial plants may be used, as well as a sand substrate (CS7538).  These fish look great in a heavily planted tank with a dark substrate.  Floating plants provide a suitable haven for fry.

The Endler's livebearer prefers a temperature of 75°F to 86°F, a pH of 7.0 to 8.5, and a hardness of 15 to 35°H.  Be sure water is clean and well oxygenated.

The Endler's livebearer is a peaceful fish suitable for a small community aquarium.  Good tank mates include other small live bearers, small rasboras, small tetras, pencil fish, cory cats, and otocinclus.  While males are peaceful towards one another, females may act quite territorial towards one another, so several should be kept in order to disperse potential bullying.  It is also recommend that several females should be kept to every male in order to dissipate vigorous harassment by males.  If breeding is not desired, house only males together.

The Endler's livebearer is easy to feed in the aquarium and will readily accept just about any appropriately sized food item such as flakes (AL165) and frozen brine shrimp (SF6777).   For maximum color, growth, and health these fish will look their best when given probiotics (AL169) in addition to a balanced diet.
