Abstract

Care for Scolymia corals.

Scolymia corals are some of the most saught after corals in the reef keeping hobby. They come in anabundance of bright colors and are relatively easy to care for. Scolymias are also rather expensive in comparison to other corals. This is due to the fact that they do not just grow a new separate coral like a zoanthid or a branching hammer. They have to reproduce sexually. Solymias are hermaphrodites, so they can release both male and female reproductive gametes. This is why they are harder to come by because propogation in captivity is near impossible. They prefer low to mid flow, moderate light, PH of 8.1-8.4, specific gravity of 1.023-1.025, DKH of 8-12, 425-450 ppm of calcium, and 1325 ppm magnesium. After the light has gone out for the evening the scoly will usually expose feeder tentacles. When this happens provide the scoly with meaty foods. CALA-fin is a great food for them, you can also use mysis, andkrill.
